Rabbi Elazar ben Azariah said to them, “Behold, I am like a man of seventy years of age, but I
never merited having the story of the Shemot told at night until ben Zoma expounded what is
written in “That you may remember the day when you came forth out of the land of Egypt all the
days of Your life” (Devarim 16,3)--”the days of Your life”, that is the days; “all the days of Your life”,
the nights as well. And the Sages say “the days of Your life”, this world; “all the days of Your life”,
the world to come in the days of the Messiah.
THE FOUR SONS
Blessed be the Omnipresent Who gave Torah
to his people Israel, blessed be He. The Torah
speaks of four sons--one wise, one wicked, one
simple, and one who does not know how to ask.
The wise one--what does he say? “What are the testimonies, and the statutes and the laws that
HASHEM our God commanded you?” (Devarim 6,20). So you tell him about the laws of Pesach,
that one may not eat anything whatsoever after the Pesach sacrifice.
The wicked one--what does he say? “What is this service
to you?” (Shemot 12,26). “To you”, and not to him. And since
he excluded himself from the people at large, he denies the
foundation of our faith. So you blunt his teeth and tell him, “It is
because of this that HASHEM acted for me when I came forth out
of Egypt” (Shemot 13,8). “For me”, and not for him; had he been
there, he would not have been redeemed.
The simple son--what does he say? “What is this?” (Shemot
13,14). “Tell him, ‘with a strong hand God took us out from Egypt,
from the house of slavery’” (ibid.).
As for the one who does not know how to ask, you must begin for him, as it is written
“and you shall tell Your son in that day, saying: It is because of this that HASHEM acted for me
when I came forth out of Egypt” (Shemot 13,8). “And you shall tell your son”, perhaps we can
begin from the beginning of the month [of Nisan]? The Tora teaches “on that day” [on the day of
the Shemot]. If “on that day”, perhaps we can begin while it is still day? The Tora teaches “because
of this”, to teach only when the Matza and Maror are placed before you.
