MI’TEHILA
At first, our ancestors were idol worshippers; but now, the
Omnipresent blessed be He has drawn us close to His service, as it is
written “And Yehoshua said unto all the people: ‘So said HASHEM,
the God of Israel: Your fathers dwelt of old time beyond the River,
even Terah, the father of Avraham, and the father of Nahor; and they
served other gods.
And I took your father Avraham from beyond the River, and led him
throughout all the land of Canaan, and multiplied his seed, and gave
him Yitzhak. And I gave unto Yitzhak Yaakov and Esav; and I gave
unto Esav mount Seir, to possess it; and Yaakov and his children went
down into Egypt’” (Yehoshua 24,2-4).
Blessed is He who keeps his promise to Israel his people, may He be blessed! For the Holy One
blessed be He calculated the end [of our bondage] in order to fulfill His pledge to Avraham in the
covenant ‘between the parts’, as it is written “And He said unto Abram: ‘Know of a surety that
Your seed shall be a stranger in a land that is not theirs, and shall serve them; and they shall afflict
them four hundred years; and also that nation, whom they shall serve, will I judge; and afterward
shall they come out with great substance’” (Bereshit 15,13-14).
VEHI SHE’AMDA
The Matzot are covered, the cup of wine is raised with the right
hand and the following is recited:
It is this that has stood by our ancestors and us: It is not only
one (enemy) that has risen up against us to destroy us; rather, in
every generation, they rise against us to annihilate us. But the
Holy One blessed He, will saves us from their hand.
