HA LAHMA ANYA
The Matzot are uncovered and raised as we say the following paragraph.
This is the bread of affliction, which our ancestors who left the land of Egypt
ate. Whoever is hungry, let him come and eat; whoever is in need of a
Passover Seder, let him come and celebrate with us. This year we are here;
next year, may we be in the Land of Israel. This year we are slaves; next year,
may we be free men.
MA NISHTANA
The Seder Plate is removed from the table and the second cup is
poured. The child then asks the questions of “Ma Nishtana.” If one
has no child, his wife asks him. If one has no wife, the participants ask
each other, even if they are all learned. If one is alone, he asks himself:
What distinguishes this night from all other nights?
On all other nights, we do not dip even once; but tonight, we dip
twice. On all other nights, we eat leavened bread and Matza; but
tonight, all is Matza.
On all other nights, we eat any vegetable; but tonight, we eat Maror.
On all other nights, we eat sitting or reclining; but tonight, we all recline.
AVADIM HAYINU
The Seder Plate is returned to the table and the Matzot are uncovered.
We were slaves to Pharaoh in Egypt; but God took us out from there, with a strong hand and
an outstretched arm. And had the Holy One, blessed be He, not taken our ancestors out of
Egypt--we, our children, and our children’s children would still be enslaved to Pharaoh in Egypt.
Therefore, even if we are all wise, all men of understanding, all well versed in the Tora--we would
still be commanded to tell about the Shemot from Egypt; and whoever tells about it at length is
worthy of praise.
Once Rabbi Eliezer, Rabbi Yehoshua, Rabbi Elazar
ben Azaryah, Rabbi Akiva and Rabbi Tarfon were
all celebrating the Seder in B’nei Berak. And
they told the story of the Shemot from Egypt the
entire night, until their students came and told
them, “Our masters, the time has come for the
morning recital of Shema!”.
