CONFERENCE THEME: “PUTTING THE PIECES TOGETHER: SISTERHOOD, EDUCATION, & CULTURAL RELEVANCY”
Delta Pi: Xinos packed school supplies for children in Nigeria, Africa, “The Shoe Box
Project”, in partnership with Good Neighbor Baptist Church, Newark, NJ. “Hat’s Off” to Xinos
Morgan Blair, for her appearance on channel 2,4 and 7 for dynamic winning video on “Bullying”.
Delta Phi: Participated in volunteering at the Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Conference at
Wexler Grant School.
Epsilon Alpha Xinos/Kudos: Xinos and Kudos from Epsilon Alpha along with their
advisors, and an Alpha advisor, met at Franklin Township Public Library in Somerset, NJ to
participate in a 5K Sickle Cell Walk organized by Epsilon Alpha. Prior to the walk, the group
was educated about sickle cell by seventeen year old Quentin Coleman, a young man who has
been living with sickle cell all of his young life. His presentation included slides that explained
the disease, discussed the variances and types of Sickle Cell Disease, symptoms during flare-ups,
followed by explanations and examples of how debilitating the disease can be. Not only was the
knowledge he imparted impactful, but the information and perspective provided by his mother,
kept the youth engaged and full of questions. While Sickle Cell Disease is a National Project for
NSPDK, Inc., the walk was personal as we walked to honor and support a Xinos member of
Alpha Chapter who has been diagnosed and striving with the disease. After the walk, the group
met for lunch at Stage House Tavern for hearty nourishment to replenish what was expended
during the walk. Epsilon Alpha Xinos and Kudos will also be making a monetary donation to the
Eastern Region to contribute to their efforts to raise money for Sickle Cell.
Recommendation:
- Chapters should commit to working with another chapter at lease once a year to allow the youth
to bond with each other.
- We need to find ways to get more chapters sharing so that we know what is going on around the
region.
