Ribbons and Menus
File Explorer in Windows 10 has the Ribbon feature found in other Microsoft products. There are four
default tabs: File, Home, Share, View and several others that appear with specific kinds of files, such as
Music Tools, Library Tools, Disk Tools, Manage Tools, and Application Tools.
When you first open File Explorer, it is focused on the Libraries folder. The options available in the
menus vary based on what is selected in Explorer. If the menu item does not apply to the item selected,
it will be grayed out.
File Tab – contains the same kind of commands found on previous Explorer versions, and varies,
depending on what is selected. They include, open, close, help, etc.
Home Tab – contains the most widely-used features that you normally do with Explorer, including
copy, cut, paste, move, delete, rename, new, properties, select, etc.
Share Tab – allows you to do several sharing tasks, such as emailing, zipping files, burn to disc, print,
share with the Home group, and security features.
View Tab – used to control the layout of the window. You can determine what is in the panes section
and determine how to display the items in the Content pane (right), including size of icon, arrangement
across the screen or down the screen, and information about each file or folder.
Context Tabs – when items such as pictures, music, library, applications are selected, a context-
sensitive tab pops up that contains menus and buttons for actions that apply to that type of file.
