Opening an Application and Creating files

Windows contains a number of programs that you can use, such as Paint, a calculator, e-mail program,
Internet program, games, etc. Programs like WordPad and Notepad are small word processing
programs in Windows that allow you to create, edit, save, and print documents. The terms “document”
and “file” are often used interchangeably; pictures, music clips, and videos that you can edit are usually
called files. Let’s create some document files to work with, using WordPad.

CREATING FILES

1. Open an application: Open the Charms Bar by pointing to the upper right corner of screen. Choose
Search. Type in WordPad. Enter. (An alternate method is go to Start Screen (press Windows key),
start typing: Word Pad. Click to select WordPad.)

2. A window will open with the WordPad program, maximize it if necessary (this program will cover the
File Explorer window.). Your window should open with a white screen. If not, click the File menu in
the program, and then click New for a new document. OK.

3. Then start typing:

Things to do:

Buy books
Talk to instructor

At this point, the contents you just typed are only stored in the computer’s RAM memory. If your
computer is turned off or loses power, any information in RAM is erased. Saving a document allows you
to name it and to store it permanently on your hard disk or USB drive. That way, the document is
preserved even when your computer is turned off, and you can open it again later. While saving it, you
will give it a unique file name.

4. To save a document: On the File menu (left of Home tab), click Save As ( shortcut: Alt+F A). Since
this is the first time you are saving the document, you’ll be asked to provide a name for it and a location
on your computer to save it to. (The right pointing arrow gives you some other options; skip for now.)

5. The Save As dialog box appears (see Save As in title bar). It looks similar to File Explorer, but it has a
different purpose. Near the bottom of the dialog box where it says File Name, a temporary name
appears—Document.rtf and is already highlighted, so type: To Do List (it erases the Document.rtf).
The .rft extension will be added to the name, indicating the type of program it was created with.

Notice that in the Save As Type box it displays Rich Text Format (.rft) (*.rft) as the default type
for WordPad. Click the down arrow and you will see several other file choices that are
available: .docx, .odt, .txt. Leave the choice on .rft.
