play Extensions. Look at the names of the files in File Explorer. Each one should have a 3-letter
extension (after the dot) --.rtf. Notice the icons are all the same. In other words, all file names with an
.rtf extension have the same W-shaped icon. Usually the 3-letter extension indicates the type of file or
the program it was created with. .rtf is the type used by WordPad, and can be used by some other
programs. If the 3-letter extension does not display with the file names, use this procedure to display
them:
To display file extensions: On File Explorer, View Tab, put check mark in front of File name
extensions
6. On File Explorer, click View Tab, put check mark in front of File name extensions
7. Still in the Save As window, in the Navigation Pane, click on your Personal Folder (Documents, Your
name, or the USB drive). Click on the in front of Word Processing Class folder, then click on
Windows Unit—the folder you created earlier for your class materials. (Verify the folder name on the
address bar.) Then press Enter or click Save button. You have now saved this document (To Do List) in
the Windows Unit folder. Notice the file name is listed on the title bar of WordPad.
8. Since we need several files to work with, we will save this again but with a different name. With the
document still open in WordPad, click File, Save As. Locate the same Windows Unit folder and click on
it. (Look at the address bar; it should already be on Windows Unit). Name the file: Friday.
9. Save the same file a third time, but with the name Assignments. You should now have three files in the
Windows Unit folder. (Shortcut for Save As: Alt, F, A)
Pin App to Task Bar. Because you may want to use some applications several more times, it is
convenient to have it pinned to the Task Bar.
9. With WordPad still open and its icon is on the Task Bar, right click the icon. Choose Pin this Program
to Task Bar. The icon will remain on the Task Bar unltil you remove it.
10. To close the WordPad program, click on File, Exit or X. Keep the File Explorer window open.
R. Selecting files
Selection Techniques. You must select (highlight) the files and folders first before giving a command.
You can also Select one or more files and move/copy them in one operation.
To select one file: single-click on its icon. (Double-click opens the file (so you can read the contents)
To select more than one file:
Click on the first file, press CTRL and click on each non-consecutive files, OR
Click on first file, press SHIFT and click on last file to select consecutive files, OR
Click contents pane, click Select All on Home tab (or use Ctrl A).
So far in your Personal Folder, you have a Word
Processing Class folder and three subfolders and three
files under it. Next we will be using these files and
folders, to copy, move, rename, and delete. Explorer
makes it easy to do these activities.
