SELECTING/DESELECTING
With the Windows Unit folder open in Navigation pane, you can see the contents of Windows Unit
folder in the Contents pane—containing the 3 files you just created. Make sure the last words on the
Address bar are Windows Unit.
1. Select (single click) on To Do List.rtf in the Content pane. It is highlighted (turns blue). If you cannot
see the .rtf on the filename, click View Tab, put check mark in front of File name extensions
2. Do a single click (select) on the other files. Notice that only one file is selected at a time.
3. Select non-consecutive files: Select To Do List.. Then hold the CTRL key down while you also select
Assignment.rtf . You have now selected 2 non-consecutive files. Click on any blank area of the
window to de-select them.
4. Select consecutive files: Click on Assignments.rtf. Then hold the Shift key down while you also select
To Do List.rtf. You have now selected 3 consecutive files. De-select.
5. Select all files: Choose Home tab, Select All. Notice a keyboard shortcut is indicated: CTRL+A. All
the files in the Windows Unit folder are now selected. De-select.
S. Copy or Cut (Move) and Paste
Copy and Cut (Move) use the same 4-step process. The results however are different:
Copy is the process of making another copy either in the same or a different folder. It results in a
second copy.
Move (cut) is the process of actually cutting a file or folder from one place and moving it to
another location where it is pasted. There remains only one copy.
There are 4 steps to the Cut or Copy and Paste process:
1. Select the files to be copied.
2. Give the Copy or Cut command. (When you give the Copy or Cut command, nothing appears to
happen. However, a “copy” of the selected item is put in the Clipboard, which is like a “holding
tank” in the computer’s memory. It remains there until it is replaced by something else. Once it is in
the Clipboard, you can Paste it to another location.)
3. Click at the new location where you want to paste it.
4. Give the Paste command.
CUT, COPY AND PASTE
With File Explorer open in Detail View on the screen, your Windows Unit folder selected in
Navigation pane, and the Address Bar ending with Windows Unit, you are ready to begin copying files.
1. Step 1: Select the Friday file. Step 2: Click the Copy button on Home tab to give the Copy command. A
copy of the file is in the clipboard (holding tank in memory).
2. Step 3: In the Navigation Pane, select Lesson 1 folder. Step 4: Click the Paste button to give the Paste
