Organizing Files and Folders
N. Documents/(Your Name) Folder
File Explorer provides a folder called Documents (or My Documents) for each person logged onto the
computer. On networks, such as your college network, it may be called (your log-on name). You may
see this rather than Computer or This PC, or it may appear under Computer.
On Personal Computers: Documents/(Your name) has been set up so that it is easy to find and you
can put ALL your data files in this folder and not ever go into Drive C or other designated drives. On
your home or personal computer, it is recommended that you use the Documents folder for all data files
you save on your hard drive or if you prefer, save them on a USB/Flash drive that you can carry with
you.
On Public Computers: On public computers, however, because there are numerous people using each
computer, most colleges and businesses provide a special Drive on which each person has a personal
folder (Documents/(Your name)) that only YOU can access, thereby providing the security needed for
privacy. For example, your college may have a Drive H or other Drive for this purpose. Therefore,
when using a public computer, always use the Drive and Documents folder provided or if you prefer, save
them on a USB/Flash drive that you can carry with you. Do NOT store your files in Documents on Drive
C.
O. Drives and Storage
Today, there are many forms of
storage for computer materials, all
of which are visible with File
Explorer. Notice the different
storage locations on this image.
