These past several months not only saw tremendous proactive patrol and solid investigatory work , but our
MSP Gang Unit members rushing to assist local partners without any hesitation. The North Team was the first
on scene to assist the Lawrence Police Department after several fights at the High School resulted in a near riot
amongst the students. Our North Team helped Lawrence PD quell the violence and restore peace. And, on a
Thursday evening in Brockton, a shooting incident occurred resulting in a young rookie officer suffering non-
life-threatening gunshot wounds and a barricaded shooter. The full compliment of the MSP Gang Unit Brockton
and New Bedford Teams responded immediately to assist with surrounding the house where the shooter was
barricading himself inside. They held their positions under significant duress as they knew the subject had
just murdered someone, shot a police officer, and was still armed and dangerous, and potentially possessed
incendiary devices. The Gang Unit members held their positions until the STOP Team was able to assemble and
take over the scene.
The MSP Unit would also like to extend a proud congratulations to Trooper Peter Towle for being awarded the
Trooper George L. Hanna Award, Medal Of Valor, for bravery in a dangerous situation that occurred in the City
Of Brockton two years ago. Congrats Pete, strong work. The Gang Unit would also like to extend a thank you and
best wishes to Lieutenant Steve Burgess for his services rendered to the Gang Unit over the past several years.
Thank you, Steve, and best of luck on your next assignment in your career!
Despite very trying times to say the least, there is zero
question that the MSP Gang Unit shows up and excels to
keep the citizens of the Commonwealth safe, no matter
what their opinion of police is. Stay safe Gang Unit, and
a very Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and Happy
New Year to all.
Respectively,
Trooper Robert McCarthy
