The  animal^  which  wag  blindfolded,  nodded

                             hended the question put to him.

                                 “ The  dog  on  this  point  is  right/'  said  the

                             sailor;  ** but  it  does  not  prove  that  a journey  of
                              GOO leagues  can he performed  in half a day”

                                   Why  not,”  answered  the  dog  through  his

                              master,  " if  it  be  in  a  country where  in  half  a

                              day there are  360 hours f”
                                 “ In what climate?”  said  the sailor, much  sur­

                              prised,  and  beginning  to  perceive  the  truth  of

                              the reply*

                                 The  spaniel  mentioned  the  frigid  zone,  *' In
                              tliat  2one/' said  his master, * the days  indeed are

                              of  different  lengths,  from  twenty-four  hours  to

                              six  months.  If Captain  Cook,”  he added, "when

                              he sailed  beyond the Polar circle, had  followed a
                              parallel  where  the  day  was  only  a  month  long,

                              he might  in  half  a day, consisting of  860  hours,

                              have  traversed the space of  GOO leagues.”

                                 The sailor, being  desirous  to puzzle the spaniel
                              and  its  master  in  his  turn,  asked  them  if  they
