them Dandie would  immediately pick it  out and

                              bring it to him.

                                 Occasionally  a  comb  was  hid  on  the  mantel­

                              piece in a room, and the  dog required  to bring it,

                              which  he  almost  immediately  did,  although  in
                              the  search  lie  found  a  number  of  articles  also

                              belonging  to  his  master  purposely  strewed

                              around, all of which he would pass  over  until  lie
                              found  the  identical  comb  as  ordered,  which  he

                              would  pick  up  and  place  in  his  master’s  hand;

                              thus fully proving that he was not guided  merely

                              by the sense of  smell, but  that  he also perfectly

                              understood whatever was said  to him.
                                 One evening some gentlemen being in company,

                              one  of  them  accidentally  dropped  a  shilling  on

                              the  floor,  which  after  a  most  careful  search

                              could  not  be  found.  His  master, seeing  Dandie

                              sitting  demurely  in  a  corner  and  looking  as
                              if  quite  unconscious  of  what  was  passing,  said

                              to him;

                                 " Dan die, find  the shilling and  you shall  have

                              a biscuit”
                                 The dog immediately leaped upon the table and
