People convicted of cruelty to animals may also serve a
jail sentence of up to one year, according to the revised
laws.
The heaviest penalty for animal abuse was previously
a maximum fine of 5 million won with no jail time.
Animal rights activists also applauded the government’s
decision to require dog owners to register their animals
starting in 2013. The associations said mandatory
registration will help reduce the number of lost and
abandoned pets.
