Unit 1

Could you refer us to a specialist?

Information: What can I do for you, Sir? Welcome to New York Hospital Queens.
Director Choi: My wife has been suffering from pain on her lower back, and she has been vom-
iting and experiencing dizziness all the time.
Information: Is it your first visit here?
Director Choi: Yes, Madam, we are on a business trip, and it is our first time here in this hospi-
                  tal.
Information: Sir, you can go straight to the Out-Patient Department and a Resident Doctor On-
Duty will check on your wife.
Director Choi: Thanks for the assistance!
O.P.D. Doctor On Duty: What happened to your wife? Please have a sit here as the nurse
                  checks on your vital signs.
               Director Choi: Thanks, Doctor.
O.P.D. Doctor On Duty: Kindly fill out this form with your personal data together with your
Medical Insurance number if in case you got one.
O.P.D. Doctor On Duty: Her vital signs are stable, but I can see that she’s pale. Do you have any
family history or medical background like Asthma, Diabetes or Tuberculosis?
Director Choi: No, I didn’t know any.
O.P.D. Doctor On Duty: Alright, if that’s the case I want to run several laboratory procedures.
Director Choi: Does this mean that my wife is truly ill, and she needs to be confined here?
O.P.D. Doctor On Duty: Not necessarily, we are still not so sure about that.

               1. Do you think that having a routine or regular medical check-up at least quar-
terly or every six months could greatly affect one’s health status?

                  Sample answer:
Yes, I do. By doing so, we can have an early diagnosis of a certain disease. Early treat-
ment could follow right away to prevent complications to arise and to give greater
chances of early recovery and survival.

               2. Explain the meaning of this quotation “A pinch of prevention is greater than
                  a pound of cure”

                  Sample answer:
This only means that the easiest and most genuine way of valuing health is not by providing
treatment to a certain illness, but rather by a paramount prevention of the spread and cause of
such disease from transferring and infecting one’s immune system and entire body. It will only
cost us a little money, effort and time if we practice and follow a healthy lifestyle compared to
