                                                        The Future of 3D Printing

36 What’s next? As 3D printing technology expands, we can expect
to see more varied materials being used by printers. Besides

plastics, metals, and food, scientists and engineers are beginning
to experiment with medicines—mixed precisely and printed
                                                        with a 3D printer.

37 What they will make depends on the creativity and skills of
the engineers. Jennifer Lewis, a researcher at Harvard University,
believes that 3D printing could ultimately save the lives of more
than 220,000 people currently waiting for transplants through
organ or kidney donations. However, developing any new

technology or invention can take years of dedicated effort to
ensure that the products are as safe and useful as possible. People
depend on scientists to put in the work so that humanity can be

rewarded, if not in one generation, then in the next.
