Unit 9
I learned a lot about transitions!
James: I think that was a good session! The coach from Rogen International had a good presen-
tation. I never realized the importance of transitions in a demonstration.
Ryan: You’re absolutely right! I really learned a lot!
James: Without proper transitions, the audience will be at a loss with the discussion.
Ryan: He also stressed the importance of arranging ideas so they naturally flow logically.
James: Well, I will try to arrange my presentation that way just as he said.
Ryan: Giving an overview before discussing the separate topics can also guide the audience.
James: I do that too, but I don’t think I’m able to summarize the previous topic properly before
proceeding to the next. I’ll definitely incorporate what I learned today for my succeeding
presentations!
Ryan: We must remember that transitions should not be overdone as well.
James: That’s right! Time and effort will be wasted by reiterating points that are not too impor-
tant.
Ryan: The next topic should be introduced but do not give away too much information all at
once.
James: Do you remember some of the transition phrases he mentioned?
Ryan: Yes, I do but I’m not sure if I can use all of them.
James: You’re right. Some do not seem to be appropriate for the types of presentation we do.
Ryan: I guess we’ll just have to think of more appropriate ones. At least, we already have a
guide.
James: I’m really looking forward to the next presentation now!
Ryan: I’m looking forward to how our presentations will improve!
1. What is the importance of transitions in a presentation?
Sample answer:
Transitions allow a speaker to link the parts of his presentation smoothly and seam-
lessly. Transitions are useful because they allow the speaker to briefly summarize what
he’s previously discussed before providing the audience with a glimpse of what’s com-
ing up next. They help the audience follow where the presentation is leading.
2. How can you smoothly link different ideas when doing a presentation?
