Calculation of pH and pOH for
Acids and Bases
1. Calcitulation of pH and pOH for strong Acids and Bases
+
a. calculate H from a solution of strong acid
Strong acids if dissolved in water will be completely ionized. In
strong acid solutions, there are two sources of H , the first source
+
is from the ionization of the acid itself and the other is from the
+
+
autoionization of water. The amount of H given by water ([H ]
+
+
from water) is much smaller than the H given by acid ([H ] from
+
acid). So the [H ] of water is negligible. Take a look at the
example below!

b. calculate OH from a solution of strong base
Strong bases if dissolved in water will be completely ionized To
-
+
calculate the [OH ] of a strong base is to calculate the [H ] of a
-
strong acid. In an alkaline solution, there are two sources of OH :
the first source is from the ionization of the base itself and the
-
other is from the autoionization of water. The amount of OH that
-
-
water gives ([OH ] from water) is much smaller than OH that is
-
-
given base ([OH ] from base). So the [OH ] of water is negligible.
Take a look at the example below!
