UNIT-NINE: PRE, INTRA, AND POSTOPERATIVE CARE
Objectives: At the end of the unit the trainees will be able to:
1. Perform pre-operative. intra operative and post-operative patient assessment
2. Provide preoperative, intraoperative, and post-operative care
3. Apply the principle of infection prevention in the intraoperative care
4. Position patient appropriately for the procedure
5. Apply surgical hand scrubbing
6. Provide psychosocial adjustment to the Patient
Definition: Perioperative care is a period that constitutes the surgical experience including
preoperative, intra-operative, and post-operative phases.
9.1 Pre-operative care
Definition: preoperative care is care given for a patient from the time the decision is
made for surgical intervention to the transfer of the patient to the operating room.
Purpose
To prepare the patient emotionally, mentally for surgery
To prevent complication before surgery unless it is an emergency operation
To promote patient and family involvement in care
Equipment:
1. Blood pressure apparatus
2. Stethoscope
3. Enema equipment and solution as needed
4. Catheterization equipment
5. Flashlight
6. Preoperative checklist
7. Container for dentures, glasses
8. Appropriate storage for valuables and clothes
9. Information packets regarding surgery
10. Informed consent forms
11. Intravenous fluids, IV set, syringe and needles, and equipment as needed
12. Preoperative medication
13. Transfer cart
