Oxygen Delivery Systems
Oxygen is administered by either low-flow or high-flow system.
A low-flow system is generally used for clients who have a respiratory rate below 25 per
minute and regular and consistent respiratory patterns. It is contraindicated for clients
who have required carefully monitored concentrations of oxygen.
Low-flow administration devices include:
Nasal cannula (Nasal prong)
Simple mask
Partial rebreathing mask
Non-rebreather mask
Oropharyngeal catheter
High-flow systems are indicated for patients who require a constant and precise amount
of oxygen.
High flow administering device includes
Trans tracheal catheters,
Venturi mask and
Aerosol Tracheostomy collar
Face tent
T-piece
Some devices can be used for low-flow and high-flow administration, for example, the
face tents the oxygen hood.
