UNIT-SEVEN: OXYGEN ADMINISTRATION
Objectives: At the end of the unit the Trainees will be able to:
1. Utilize different oxygenation delivery system when necessary
2. Demonstrate precaution of oxygen administration
3. Deliver oxygen appropriately
Monitor oxygenation level of client
Oxygen is a colorless, odorless, tasteless gas that is essential for the body to function properly
and to survive. When chilled to liquid or frozen to solid it turns a light blue color
Oxygen therapy is the administration of oxygen at a concentration greater than that found in the
environmental atmosphere. The concentration of o2 in room air is 21 %.
Purpose
To provide and maintain a normal supply of O2 for blood and tissues
The goal of oxygen therapy
o Oxygen therapy has three fundamental goals.
o Improve tissue oxygenation
o Decrease work of breathing in dyspneic clients.
o Decrease work of the heart in clients with cardiac disease.
Oxygen transport to the tissue depends on factors such as:
Cardiac output.
Arterial oxygen content.
The adequate concentration of hemoglobin.
Metabolic requirement.
Oxygen therapy is used to primarily reverse hypoxemia (below normal amount of oxygen
in the blood) which manifested by:
• Change of mental status (progressing through judgment, agitation, disorientation,
confusion, lethargy, and coma).
• Dyspnea
• Increased blood pressure
• Change in heart rate
• Dysrhythmia
• Central cyanosis(late sign)
• Diaphoresis
• Cool extremities
Indications oxygen therapy
Obstruction in air passage like a foreign body, growth enlarged thyroid.
Bronchial asthma
Pneumonia and pulmonary edema.
Cardiac insufficiency.
Peripheral circulatory failure.
