6.6 Fracture bed
Bed board under normal bed and cradle
Purpose
To provide a flat, unyielding surface to support the fractured limb.
Equipment
1. Articles as for a closed bed
2. Small blanket or draw sheet
3. Fractured board
4. Bed cradle
5. Small rubber sheet
6. Draw sheet
7. Sandbags
8. Pillow if required
N.B:
The fracture board keeps the bed with no danger of sagging.
It is also used for fracture of the spine.
A bed cradle is a frame made of wire, wood, or iron. It is used to keep the top covers
from touching the injured part.
Procedure
1. Place the fractured board on the springs with the mattress on it. If the mattress is thin,
an extra mattress must be added to prevent pressure sore due to pressure on the hard
surface.
2. Make the bottom bed as usual, then place the small rubber sheet covered withdraw
sheet at the place where the injured party will be resting. The small rubber and draw
sheet are easier to change then the whole bed. This applies especially to an arm or a leg
which is bleeding or his discharge.
3. Fold back the bedclothes at the foot of the bed for a leg fracture. Cover the uninjured
limb with a small blanket. Extra blankets and spreads may be necessary. Be sure that
the covers come high enough on the shoulders.
