UNIT-SIX: BED MAKING
At the end of this unit students will able to:
1. Apply the correct steps in preparing different types of bed
2. Comfort the patient
3. Prevent bedsore
6.1 Closed bed
A closed bed is a smooth, comfortable and clean bed, which is prepared for a new
patient
Equipment
1. Two large sheets
2. Rubber draw sheets if necessary
3. Draw sheet if necessary
4. Blankets
5. Pillowcases
6. Bedspread
7. Mattress cover (as needed)
8. Large rubber sheet
9. (for obstetric and incontinent patients only)
Procedure
1. Place chair at the foot of the bed
2. Place linen on the chair in the order that it will be used
3. Turn mattress and arrange overly on the bed
4. put on mattress cover if available
5. place the bottom sheet with the right side up, the center of the sheet on the center of the
bed, and wide hem at the head of the bed
6. Tuck the sheet under the mattress at the head of the bed and meter the corner
7. Remain on one side of the bed until you have completed making the bed on that side
8. Tuck sheets smoothly under the mattress. There should be no wrinkles
9. Tuck sheet on the sides and foot of be mitering the corners
10. Place rubber draw sheet in the center of the bed and tuck tightly
11. Place the cotton draw sheet on top of the rubber draw sheet and tuck. Rubber draw
sheet should be covered completely
12. Place the top sheet with the wrong side up, centerfold sheet on the center of the bed and
wide hem at the head of the bed
13. Tuck sheet at foot of bed mitering the corner
14. Place blankets with the center of the blanket on the center of the bed and tuck at the
foot of the bed and miter corner. Fold the top sheet over the blanket
