Lifter puts one arm under the patient's shoulder and one under his thighs
Have the patient lift himself and push with his heels
As you lift the patient toward the head of the bed, swing your weight on to your
forward foot.
5.3 Moving patient to side
Flex patient’s knees
Place one arm under the patient's neck shoulders, support the patient's head on your
upper arm
Place another arm well under the patient's upper body
Draw the upper part of the body towards the edge of the bed
Slip one hand under the lower part of the back and then another one under the hips
Draw the lower part of the body towards the edge of the bed
5.4 Turning patient on side
Stand at the side of the bed towards which the patient is to be turned
Flex patient’s knees
Carry arm over the patient’s body and slip one hand under the shoulder and the other
under the hips of the patient
Gently but firmly roll the patient towards you.
Make sure that the patient is lying securely and comfortably on the shoulder and hip
The lower leg should be extended and the upper leg flexed and resting on a pillow, if
available
If the patient is to be left on the side, the hips should be moved towards the center of
the bed
A small pillow or pad may be placed between the patient’s knees or a larger one under
one knee
A pillow may be placed lengthwise at the patient's back, tucked close up for support
The upper hand and arm may be rested comfortably on the pillow
NB: To prevent pressure sore, remove pillows at intervals
5.5 Turning a patient with a draw sheet
The patient must be at the further side of the bed
Flex the knees
Roll the draw sheet first and grasp the ends of the draw sheet form the far side of the
bed and turn the patient towards you
Support the patient as previously instructed
