Equipment
1. Commercial kit for clean –voided urine containing:
2. Sterile cotton balls and/or 2X2 inch gauze pads.
3. Antiseptic solution
4. Sterile water or saline
5. Sterile specimen collection container and sterile glove
6. Soap, water, washcloth, and towel Bedpan (for non-ambulatory). client), specimen hat(if
all urine needs to be measured),potty-chair (for a young child )
7. Completed specimen identification label
8. Completed laboratory requisition form
Procedures
1. Explain the procedure
2. Wash hands
3. Assemble the necessary equipment
4. Provide privacy for the client around the bed or closing room door. Allow the mobile
client to collect the specimen in the bathroom or toilet
5. Give the client a cleansing towel, washcloth, and soap to cleanse the perineum, or
assist the client with cleansing perineum (if able)
6. Assist bedridden client onto the bedpan
7. Using surgical asepsis, open the sterile kit, or prepare a sterile tray.
8. Wear sterile gloves
9. Pour antiseptic solution over cotton balls (unless the kit contains prepared gauze pads
in antiseptic solution)
10. Open the specimen container, and place the cap with sterile inside surface up, and do
not touch the inside of the container.
11. Perform urine collection by assisting or allowing the client to independently cleanses
perineum and collect the specimen. The amount of assistance needed varies with each
client. The nurse will assess the client's ability to perform the procedure and assist as
needed.
Male client
Either nurse or client will hold the client's penis with one hand. using a circular motion
and antiseptic swab, cleanse meatus, moving from the center to outsides
If the agency procedure indicates, rinse the area with sterile water and dry with cotton
balls or gauze pad.
After the client has initiated urine stream into the toilet or bedpan, pass the urine
specimen container into the stream and collect 30-60ml of urine
