UNIT-SIXTEEN: ADMINISTRATION OF MEDICATIONS
Objectives: At the end of the unit the students will be able to:
1. Perform medication withdrawing from a vial and ampoule
2. Apply rights of medication administration
3. Identify necessary equipment for administering medication via different routes.
4. Administer medication and fluid with acceptable technique
5. Identify appropriate sites of drug administration
The drug is any substance that alters physiologic function, with the potential for
affecting health.
Medication: - is a drug used for diagnosis, prevention, relieving pain, and treatment of
diseases. Thus, all medications are drugs, but not all drugs are medications. Safety is
most important in preparing drugs and implementing drug administration. The
Medication administer observes the three checks and eight rights when administering
medication.
Three checks
When the nurse reaches the container or unit dose package.
Immediately before opening or pouring the medication.
When replacing the container on the shelf or prior to giving the unit dose medication to
the patient.
Eight rights of medication administration
Right medication: Compare drug card, medication sheet, or drug "kardex" (client's
medication record), with label on drug container. We should know the action, dosage, and
method of administration, side effects of the drug.
1. Right client: check the client’s identification-Name, age, bed number, and ward
2. The right dose: QID, TID, Stat, PRN
3. The Right Route: IM, IV, PO
4. The Right Time: cheek amount
5. The Right to refuse
6. The Right documentation
7. The Right to Know the formulation
Parts of the medication order
The medication order consists of seven parts. These are:
A. Client’s name
B. Date & time the order is written
C. Name of the drug to b administered
D. Dosage of the drug
E. Route by which the drug is to be administered
