Precautions and nursing responsibilities when administrating medication
General instructions
Protect the patient from aspiration by positioning properly (sitting or standing)
Watch all patients for drug reactions.
Always keep the bottle tightly closed.
Clean and keep the table & bottle clean.
Keep the medication away from light.
Check their expiration date.
Never pour the medicine back into the bottle.
Never use a drug when the label is not clear.
Ask every order which is not clear.
Never talk while measuring the medication.
Never chart any medication on the chart before giving it.
Never leave medicine at the bedside unless specified. See that the patient takes it (and
does not keep under the pillow).
Any bottle containing sediment should not be used.
Solutions that have become discolored should not be given.
Before giving hypnotics have your patient ready for sleep.
Do not give medicine poured by others or don't chart for someone else.
Always remember the five rights and the three checks.
Some medicines have an unpleasant taste. A piece of fruit or a sweet will taste away

Definition: Oral medication is drugs administered by mouth.

To prevent the disease and take the supplement to maintain health
To cure the disease
To promote health
To give palliative treatment
To give as a symptomatic treatment
When local effects are desired
When prolonged systemic action is desired
