4.2.1 Morning, afternoon, and evening care
Purpose
For cleanliness and comfort of the patient.
To refresh and prepare the patient for breakfast (morning care)
To make the patient comfortable after visiting hours (afternoon care)
To prepare the patient for the night (evening care)
Equipment
1. Bedpan or urinal
2. Basin of hot water and soap
3. Hand towel and washcloth
4. Powder
5. Kidney basin if available
6. Toothbrush (if the patient has one)
7. Container for dentures (if the patient has one)
8. Mouth wash
9. Drinking tube or straw (if necessary)
10. Fresh drinking water
11. Comb and brush
The procedure of morning care
1. Screen patient (if inward)
2. Offer bedpan or urinal
3. Wash the patient's face and hands and dry well (allow the patient to do himself if he is
able)
4. Assist the patient to brush his teeth-placing towel under his chin.
5. If the patient is incontinent and bedridden give special care to the soiled area and back
care if needed.
6. Change the draw sheet if necessary.
7. Straighten bed cloth.
8. Place the patient in a comfortable position.
9. Clean and return Equipment.
10. Leave the unit in order.
11. Report any unusual observation.
