Telegraphing punches: In boxing, telegraphing means
allowing your opponent to easily anticipate your next move
through certain pre-adjustments made to your neutral
stance prior to execution. Telegraphing, or winding, your
punches results in a compromised defense.
An example of this can be illustrated with an uppercut as
seen on the right. To properly throw an uppercut without
compromising your defense, lower your forearm so that your
elbow has between a 30- to 90-degree angle.
Simultaneously, rotate around the waist to throw the
uppercut upward and outward toward your target. If you
wind your punch by pulling your elbow backward, rather
than lowering your elbow, you will expose your chin, which
compromises your defense.
