Pocket Guide to Knots & Splices
4 Leave one pair of strands in the middle, and with
the other pair lay and unlay until there are three
separate pairs of strands.
5 Trim the longest strand of the pair down to a
workable length.
6 Make the first part of a reef knot by tucking the left
strand over the right strand and then under.
7 Pull the knot tight. It should bed down neatly or you
have tucked in the wrong direction.
8 Bring one of the ends over itself and under the
adjacent strand tucking against the lay of the rope.
9 Repeat with the other strand.
10 Make a second tuck over and under with both
strands.
11 This completes one of the three sets of strands;
now repeat with the other two sets of strands.
12 With the ends of the strands tucked and trimmed
at each of the three places the long splice is
complete.
