Ocean Mat

Just as Turk’s heads capture some
knot tyers’ imaginations, so do flat

knots or mats. The ocean mat, some¬

times called the ocean plait mat, is a
good mat to start with. From the
simple overhand knot a couple of

pulls, twists and tucks will give a

handsome design. You may find it
helps to pin the design out as you go.

It is possible to extend this design by
further pulls, twists, and tucks. Once

the initial design has been made it
may be followed round two, three, or

more times to make the finished mat.

1 Start with an overhand knot (see page 38).
2 Pull down two bights to form “ears,”
leaving the two ends sticking up and out
                   of fhe knof.

3 Twisf fhe “ears” in a clockwise direction.
