Oysterman’s Stopper Knot
Trailing from an oyster boat, Clifford Ashley, the
author of The Ashley Book of Knots, saw what he
thought was a new knot, and he set about
copying it; this is the result. However, when he
came to actually untie the knot he had seen, it
turned out to just be a simple figure-of-eight
knot tied in a very old and frayed piece of
rope. This happy accident gives us another
bulky stopper knot to use.
