3. To what extent does the role of technology as a conduit that changes academic curricula
impact student learning outcome at tertiary institutions?
Review of Literature
The study of technology as a Segway to supporting knowledge construction forms the
main theme of this paper. The literature review will expand on knowledge construction with
specific discussions on (1) the impact of technology on students learning outcomes; (2) how the
students are learning the materials; (3) when and where the students are learning the instructional
materials; and (4) summarizing the importance of technology and its requirements as a facilitator
that harnesses technology in supporting knowledge construction in Nigerian tertiary institutions.
The Impact of Technology on Student Learning Outcomes
The traditional teaching modality has consistently emphasized content which allows for
the usage of textbooks, conference articles and mimeographs used by instructors during
instructions. These materials are likened to as instructional tools for accomplishing lectures and
other formal learning activities programed to achieve measurable learning outcomes. In support
of this understanding, Oliver (2002) opined that “for many years academic courses have been
written around textbooks, teachers have taught through lectures and presentations interspersed
with tutorials and learning activities designed to consolidate and rehearse the content. However,
in present time classroom driven by technological innovation support systems, the instructional
modality in the classroom has changed. The contemporary classroom settings are more leaning
towards curricula that promote competency and performance, thereby laying more emphasizes
on capabilities. This paradigm shift in instructional method lean more towards how the learning
outcomes will be used than what it is.
