Theoretical Framework
Theories are formulated to explain, predict, and understand phenomena and, in many
cases, to challenge and extend existing knowledge within the limits of critical bounding
assumptions. A theoretical framework is the structure that can hold or support a theory of a
research study. This research theoretical framework is based on Bandura (1989) social cognitive
theory which thrives on the advancement of new technologies which supports Koch (2007)
contention positing that learning occurs in a social context with a dynamic and reciprocal
interaction of the person, environment, and behavior. “Social and technological changes alter,
often considerably, the kinds of life events that become customary in the society. Indeed, many
of the major changes in social and economic life are ushered in by innovations of technology
(Elder, 1985; Bandura, 1989, p. 5-6)” which provides new and innovative methods to create
social learning environments.
Research Questions
In an attempt to provide significant viewpoints and further discussion on the role technology
plays in supporting knowledge construction thereby improving student learning outcomes, and in
its attempt to contribute to the growing body of knowledge, is guided by the following research
questions:
1. To what extent does technology as a Segway support knowledge construction in
contemporary tertiary institutions?
2. Are there significant differences in the conventional traditional instructional material
teaching modality to the contemporary technology driven collaborative student engaging
delivery system?
