Purpose of Study

Harnessing technology for social and academic benefits at various tertiary institutions

across the world seems to be of great importance in today’s changing academic environment.

The growth in Internet and Broadband sector, mobile telephones, electronic mail system, you-

tube, yahoo messenger, my space, satellite capabilities and computerized databases have

accelerated in recent years due to the improvement in infrastructural designs such as the wireless

access technologies (Nwokeafor, 2015). The broadband capability which replaced the dial-up

systems has resulted in changing both the speed and accuracy of the technology system. This

paper, therefore reviews how the infusion of technology driven means of information access

portal should be a driving force in harnessing technology as a Segway to supporting knowledge

construction in institutions of learning across the world.

                                                 Significance of the Study

The significance of this study revolves within the emergence of technology as the most

significant invention of our time. Technology has significantly impacted the educational system

globally given the fact that the preparation of course content and delivery modalities has been so

improved and individualized. In most instances, students abstract content information through an

electronic means as well complete and submit their homework and projects through the same

means. Television and cable capabilities could present issues and class contents to students in

the comfort of their homes or library with or without the presence of the teacher. The

significance of this paper lies in its assumption that information technology (IT) continues to

play considerable role in harnessing and supporting knowledge construction in the educational

industry thereby changing the educational landscape.
