Revitalize Ancestors’ Heritage and Create a
City of a Thousand Ponds
Because of its landform, Taoyuan Plateau has no rivers with stable
Chintan Park
water flow. There is a great precipitation difference in the high and
(Green Pond Park) low water level periods, so the ancestors in Qing Dynasty built a
Taoyuan City large number of ponds for water storage and irrigation to conquer
shortage of irrigation water. However, after the completion of
Taoyuan Main Canal and Shihmen Main Canal, along with the
decline of agriculture and urban development, etc., the beautiful
landscape initially with tens of thousands of ponds has gradually
disappeared. To maintain the pond landscape, in 2004, Taoyuan
County Government put forward “Taoyuan County Pond and
Main Canal Regeneration Comprehensive Development Project,”
completed “Pond Regeneration Construction Model Point
Comprehensive Development Plan” in 2005, appointed nine
model points such as Bade, Chungli, Taoyuan and Dayuan, and
completed the first model point, Chintan Park (Green Pond Park),
to regenerate the ancestors’ trailblazing heritage and continue the
landscape context. It can preserve not only the primitive wetland
ecology, reduce the urban heat island effect, prevent disasters,
flood storage, connect the Taoyuan water networks, etc., but
what’s important is that it provides the citizens with an important
recreational location.
