Kaohsiung Wetland Ecological Corridor
The Process Between “The Return of the Pheasant-
Tailed Jacana Project” to Kaohsiung Wetland
Ecological Corridor
For the construction of Taiwan High Speed Rail in 2000, Environmental Protection
Administration committee made a conclusion which required Taiwan High Speed Rail
Company together with Tainan City Government to undergo the compensation and
restoration construction of Pheasant-Tailed Jacana habitations. Firstly, chosen 15 hectares
of properties from Taiwan Sugar Corporation in Guantian Dist. of Tainan City as the
habitation for restoration, and entrusted Chinese Wild Bird Federation and Wetlands
Taiwan together to found the Jacana Restoration Committee. It has succeeded after
two years of restoration. The number of Jacana have increased from 4 nets to 27 nets,
in the meantime the space of 15 hectares has gradually saturated. Therefore, Wetlands
Taiwan proposed “The return of the Pheasant-Tailed Jacana Project” to Kaohsiung City
Government in 2003. After the approval of Public Works Bureau of Kaohsiung City
Government, it took five years using Eco-Engineering to build a wetland ecological
park in Jhouzai Wetland, which includes restoring Protophyta, amending water system,
restoring Jacana, and ecological education. Started from houzai Wetland, Kaohshiung
City consecutively completed 19 wetlands of diverserd habitates after decades of efforts,
from northmost Nanzihsiian River Wetland of Kaohshiung City, to southmost Linyuan
Manmade Wetland to lined up the Wetland Ecological Corridor with its total area
over 900 hectares. Moreover, to integrate environmental planning, upgrade recreational
facilities nearby, set up the serial system and combine overall regional development to
improve civilian livelihood also the ecological environment, making Kaohsiung City a
healthy wetland eco-system capital.
