Lead-Up Games
I am one of those crazy guys who believe that developing these necessary motor skills can be
accomplished with various activities. Developing sport-specific skills is best accomplished by playing
the sport. However, we are not at that point yet. Activities that involve the basic motor patterns of
running, jumping, throwing, catching, etc., all have value to developing the young athlete. Here are
some examples of activities that will have value for the developing athlete.
Dribble a soccer ball around cones
Relay race- running, hopping, skipping
Competition- who can throw a softball the greatest distance, or the highest miles per hour, who
can run the fastest, who can jump the highest, etc.
