People only fear what they don’t understand. I used to think a foreign
language is scary like that bear. Until I found out the true nature of
language, the bear suddenly became docile and extraordinarily lovely.
Love is the foundation of any achievements. Now, let’s find out the

true nature of language through an experiment: do you know any fruit
that is long-shaped, yellow colored, and soft to the touch?

99% người tôi hỏi đều trả lời là “quả chuối”, 1% còn lại lựa chọn bóng

bay hoặc một thứ gì đó khiến họ tự nhiên cười mà không nói gì. Và tôi
tự hỏi, sao không ai trả lời là “banana” nhỉ? Tất nhiên rồi, chúng ta là
người Việt. Nếu bạn là người Anh, có lẽ “banana” sẽ bật ra!

99% people answered me “quả chuối” (a banana), the 1% remaining
chose a yellow balloon or some secret things that made them smile.
But I wonder why no one answered “banana”? Of course, they are
Vietnamese. If they were English, the answer “banana” would pop

out.

Bản chất của ngôn ngữ thật đơn giản. Chúng là phương tiện do con
người tạo ra, để truyền đạt các ý tưởng một cách hiệu quả, mà ai lại đi

sợ thứ mình tạo ra cơ chứ? Nhờ có ngôn ngữ, bạn không cần phải ra
chợ giải thích, “Cô ơi, bán cho cháu cái dài dài, vàng vàng, sờ mềm
mềm…” Mà chỉ đề cần nói “quả chuối” là cái thứ “dài dài, vàng vàng,
sờ mềm mềm” ấy bật ra trong đầu cô bán hoa quả.

The true nature of language is simple. It is a tool that people created
to help them share ideas effectively. Why should someone fear what
he created? Thanks to language, you don’t have to explain to a sales

clerk at the marketplace, “I want to buy a fruit that is long-shaped,
yellow colored and soft to the touch…” just saying “banana” is enough
to draw a picture in her mind.
