                                   Chapter 2 - Lesson 3                                                                 ד רמאמ - י ֶנ ֵֶ ר ִר ִׁ

             Rebbe Levi – The pasuk states “He built her,” meaning, He created                     פַי ְנ ֶבּ ל ִֶ תּדּסְי ַה ת ִא םי ֶר ְזּ ַח ְמוּ םי ֶחי ֶנּ ַמ ה ָנֶּא ֶר ָה ה ָנ ָשּׁ ַבּ ִֶ
             her.  Hashem gave careful thought to the place from which she would
             be created.  Hashem said I will not create her from the head of the                       .ה ִלּ ֵא תּדּסְי ל ַע ךְ ָכּ ר ַח ַא תּנ ָבּ ֶה ְל ךְי ֶֶ ְמַיּ ִֶ ,תֶי ַבּ ַה
             man so that she will not think of herself as being the head (meaning
             she will become haughty and arrogant).  I will not create her from                    ל ַעֹׁ ַל ה ָא ָצּה ַה ת ִא ."ד ָח ֶא רֹ ָש ָב ְל וּי ָה ְו - ה ָרי ִצ ְי ַה ת ַנ ָוּ ַכּ הֶזּ ֶשׁ"
             his eye so that she will not be too curious to see what is going on all
             around her, and not from his ear so that she will not be inquisitive                  :י ֵמ ָר  ה ָדוּהְי  ב ַר ְדּ"  .וּנ ָל  ר ֵצּיּ ַה  רי ֶא ְֶ ֶה  ה ָרי ֶצְי ַה  ת ַנ ָוּ ַכּ  ל ִֶ
             (from the Torat Kohanim – to hear everything going on around her),                    ה ָב ֵר ְנוּ ר ָכ ָז' בי ֶת ְכוּ ,'ּמ ְל ַצ ְבּ ם ָד ָא ָה ת ִא םי ֶרלֹ ֱא א ָר ְבֶיּ ַו' בי ֶת ְכּ
             and not from his mouth so that she will not talk endlessly.  And
             not from his heart so that she will not be envious (from the Torat                    ,םֶי ַנ ְֶ תּאר ְב ֶל ה ָב ֶָ ֲח ַמ ְבּ ה ָל ָע ה ָלּ ֶח ְתּ ֶמ ?ד ַצי ֵכּ א ָה .'ם ָא ָר ְבּ
             Kohanim – an expression of being jealous).  And not from his hand                     ףּסּ ַב ְלּ ִֶ :י" ֶֶ ַר ם ֶָ פֵיּ ַע ְו( ]א"ע 'ח תּבּ ֻת ְכּ[ "ד ָח ִא א ָר ְב ֶנ ףּסּ ַב ְלוּ
             so that she will not be one who touches everything.  And not from
             his foot so that she will not have wanderlust (from Torat Kohanim                     ה ָב ֵר ְנוּ  וי ָנ ָפ ְלּ ֶמ  ר ָכ ָז  ,פי ֶפוּצ ְר ַׁ  י ֵנ ְֶ  -  ה ָרי ֶצְי  א ָד ֲח  א ָר ְב ֶנ
             – so she will not be a walkabout).  Rather she will be created from                   ר ֶָ ְפ ִא ךְי ֵא .)ר ֵח ַא ךְ ִר ִד ְבּ ֶ ֵר ֵׁ ִֶ תּפ ָסּתּ ם ֶָ פֵיּ ַע ְו ,רּח ָא ֵמ
             a place on the man’s body that is modestly hidden…and in each
             and every one of the limbs that Hashem created within her He said                     ךְי ֶר ָצ  ם ַג ְו  ."ד ָח ִא  א ָר ְב ֶנ  ףּסּ ַב ְלוּ  ...ה ָב ֶָ ֲח ַמ ְבּ  ה ָל ָע"  פי ֶב ָה ְל
             to her – “Be a modest woman, be a modest woman.”  Nevertheless                        ,ה ָב ֵר ְנ ֶל ְו ר ָכ ָז ְל ,םֶי ַנ ְֶ ֶל ד ָח ִא ָה ר ַל ֱח ִנ ףּסּ ַב ְל י ֵר ֲה - פי ֶב ָה ְל
             (Mishle 1:25) “and you rejected My counsel.”  I did not create her
             from the man’s head, and yet she takes pride in her head, as it says                  וּני ֵני ֵע ת ִא רי ֶא ֵמ ל" ַצ ַז א" ָר ְגּ ַה .םֶי ַנ ְֶ וּא ְר ְב ֶנ ףּסּ ַב ְל פ ֵכּ ם ֶא
             (Yeshaya 3:16) “Haughty, walking with an outstretched neck,” and                      - וּר ְמ ָא ִֶ וּה ִז ְו" :ּנֶּ ְל ה ִז ְו ]'י ,'ט ר ִר ִׁ[ י ֵל ְֶ ֶמ ְל ֶּוּר ֵפ ְבּ ה ִז ָבּ
             not from his eye, yet she is called curious, as it says (Yeshaya 3:16)                א ָלּ ִא א ָר ָבּ אלֹ ףּסּ ַב ְלוּ ,םֶי ַנ ְֶ אֹר ְב ֶל ה ָב ֶָ ֲח ַמ ְבּ ה ָל ָע ה ָלּ ֶח ְת ֶבּ
             “Winking eyes,” and not from his ear, and yet she is inquisitive
             to  listen  to  everything,  as  it  says  (Beresheet  18:10)  “Sarah  was            ֶּד ָקּ ַה א ָר ָבּ ִשּׁ ה ַמּ ִֶ א ָלּ ִא .יוּנּ ֶֶ ֵֶי םּל ֶָ ְו ס ַח י ֶכ ְו ,ד ָח ִא
             listening from the doorway of the tent,”   and not from his heart,                    ה ָמ  י ֶכ ְו  .ר ִז ֵע ְל  ּל  תּי ְה ֶל  י ֵד ְכּ  אוּה  ה ָשּׁ ֶא ָה  ת ִא  אוּה  ךְוּר ָבּ

             and yet she is envious, as it says (Beresheet 30:1) “Rachel  was
             envious of her sister.”  And not from his hand, and yet her hand is                   ךְ ַא .םֶי ַנ ְֶ וּי ְהֶיּ ִֶ תי ֶל ְכ ַתּ ַה ר ַקּ ֶע ְו ,ד ָח ִא ףוּגּ ם ֵה ִֶ ְכּ הּ ָבּ ת ִל ִעּתּ
             in everything, as it says (Beresheet 31:19) “Rachel stole her father’s                ה ָב ֲה ַא א ֵה ְתּ ִֶ י ֵד ְכּ ,ד ָח ִא ה ָלּ ֶח ְתּ אוּה ךְוּר ָבּ ֶּד ָקּ ַה א ָר ָבּ ִשּׁ ה ַמ
             idols - Terafim.”  And not from his foot, and yet she is a walkabout,
             as it says (Beresheet 34:1) “Dinah went out…to Shechem.”                              ד ָח ִא ףוּגּ וּי ְהֶיּ ִֶ ,וי ָבּר ְר ר ָא ְֶוּ וי ָח ִא ֵמ ר ֵתּי ם ִהי ֵני ֵבּ ה ָו ֲח ַא ְו
                                                                                                   ם ָא ְר ָב ְל ה ָלּ ֶח ְתּ ה ָל ָע ה ָב ֶָ ֲח ַמּ ַבּ וּנְי ַה ְדּ ,"ה ָלּ ֶח ְתּ ַבּ" וּה ִז ְו .ֶ ָמּ ַמ

             8.   (Beresheet 18:9) “The angels asked – Where is your wife Sarah”  …“to             ה ָלּ ֶח ְתּ  א ָר ָבּ  הֹ ִש ֲע ַמ ְבּ  ךְ ָכּ  ר ַח ַא ְו  ,תי ֶל ְכ ַתּ ַה  אוּה  פ ֵכּ ִֶ  ,םֶי ַנ ְֶ
                 teach us that she was modest, in order to endear her to her husband.”
                 (Rashi, Beresheet 18:9, citing Gemara Babba Metziah 87b).  On the                 ."ה ָב ֶָ ֲח ַמ ְבּ ה ָל ָע ה ָלּ ֶח ְתּ ַבּ - ר ַמ ָא ִֶ םּר ָמ ל ָכ ְבּ אוּה פ ֵכ ְו .ד ָח ִא
                 one hand we learn about her modesty, and on the other hand Chazal
                 disclose to us here the character-trait of wanting to be informed, which
                 will be explained later.
