             that in the first year they build and strengthen the foundation of                    פ ֶמ  אלֹ  .)הּ ָת ָו ֲא ַג ְבּ  ת ִט ִלּ ַבּ ְת ֶמ(  הּ ֶָאֹר  ת ִר ִקַּי ְמ  א ֵה ְתּ  אלֹּ ִֶ
             their relationship which will continue to be built on this foundation
             throughout all of the years of their lives.                                           תי ֶנ ָתְיּ ַצ א ֵה ְתּ אלֹּ ִֶ פ ִזֹא ָה פ ֶמ אלֹ ְו .תי ֶנ ָר ְר ַס א ֵה ְתּ אלֹּ ִֶ ,פֶי ַע ָה
                                                                                                   א ֵה ְתּ אלֹּ ִֶ ,ה ִׁ ַה פ ֶמ אלֹ ְו .)ר ָב ָדּ ל ָכּ  ַעֹמ ְֶ ֶל ת ִֶ ִקּ ַב ְמ :כ"תמ(
             “This is the intent of Creation – that they will be one being.”  The                  פֶּ ְל  :כ"תמ(  תי ֶנ ָתּ ְנ ַר  א ֵה ְתּ  אלֹּ ִֶ  ,ב ֵלּ ַה  פ ֶמ  אלֹ ְו  .תי ֶנ ָר ְבּ ַד
             ability to bring into reality the intent of Creation was left to us by the
             Creator.  (Gemara Ketubot 8a) “Rav Yehudah noted a contradiction                      ,ל ִג ִר ָה פ ֶמ אלֹ ְו .תי ֶנ ֶָ ְמ ְֶ ַמ א ֵה ְתּ אלֹּ ִֶ ,דָיּ ַה פ ֶמ אלֹ ְו .)ה ָא ְנ ֶר
             - It is written in one place “Elokim created man (singular) in His                    אוּה ִֶ םּר ָמּ ֶמ א ָלּ ִא .)תי ֶנ ָא ְצַי :כ"תמ( תי ֶנ ָס ְר ַׁ א ֵה ְתּ אלֹּ ִֶ
             image,” and it is written in another place “He created them (plural)
             male and female.”  How was that done?  In the beginning He thought                    הָי ָה  הּ ָבּ  א ֵרּבּ  הָי ָה ִֶ  ר ָבי ֵא ְו  ר ָבי ֵא  ל ָכּ  ל ַע ְו  ...ם ָד ָא ָבּ   ַעוּנ ָצ
             to create them as two, and in the end He created them as one.”                        ל ַע  ף ַא  .ה ָעוּנ ְצ  ה ָשּׁ ֶא  א ֵה ְתּ  ,ה ָעוּנ ְצ  ה ָשּׁ ֶא  א ֵה ְתּ  :הּ ָל  ר ֵמּא
             (Please study carefully the Rashi in his commentary on the Gemara
             “In the end He created one being with two façades, male in the front                  הּ ָתּא י ֶתא ָר ָבּ אלֹ ."י ֶת ָצ ֲע ל ָכּ וּע ְר ְפ ֶתּ ַו" :]ה"כ ,'א י ֵל ְֶ ֶמ[ פ ֵכ י ֶׁ
             and female in the back.”  See also the Tosafot there who explained it                 :]ז"ט ,'ג וּהָי ְע ְֶַי[ ר ַמ ֱא ִנּ ִֶ ,הּ ֶָאֹר ת ִר ִקַּי ְמ אי ֶה י ֵר ֲה ַו ,ֶאֹר ָה פ ֶמ
             differently).  “How is it possible to even think that “In the beginning
             He thought…and in the end He created them as one?”  One also                          תי ֶנ ָר ְר ַס אי ֶה י ֵר ֲה ַו ,פֶי ַע ָה פ ֶמ אלֹ ְו ."פּר ָגּ תּיוּט ְנ ה ָנ ְכ ַל ֵתּ ַו"
             must understand that ultimately in the end He divided the one being                   ,תי ֶנ ָתְי ַצ אי ֶה י ֵר ֲה ַו ,פ ִזֹא ָה פ ֶמ אלֹ ְו ."םֶי ַני ֵע תּר ְקּ ַס ְמוּ" ]ם ֶָ[
             into two individuals, male and female, and that being so, in the end                  אלֹ ְו . 8 6"ל ִהֹא ָה ח ַת ִׁ ת ַע ַמֶֹ ה ָרֹ ָש ְו" ]'י , ח"י תי ֶֶא ֵר ְבּ[ ר ַמ ֱא ִנּ ִֶ
             He did create them as two.”  The Gra ZT”L  opens our eyes on this
             topic in his commentary on Mishle (9:10) quoted as follows: “That                     ל ֵח ָר א ֵנּ ַר ְתּ ַו" ]'א ,'ל ם ֶָ[ ר ַמ ֱא ִנּ ִֶ ,תי ֶנ ָתּ ְנ ַר אי ֶה י ֵר ֲה ַו ,ב ֵלּ ַה פ ֶמ
             which was said – In the beginning He thought to create them as two                    ם ֶָ[ ר ַמ ֱא ִנּ ִֶ ,תי ֶנ ֶָ ְמ ְֶ ַמ ְמ אי ֶה י ֵר ֲה ַו ,דָיּ ַה פ ֶמ אלֹ ְו ."הּ ָתּח ֲא ַבּ
             yet in the end He created only one – Is there, G-d forbid, change in
             His “mind”?!  Rather, HaKadosh Bruch Hu created the woman in                          אי ֶה י ֵר ֲה ַו ,ל ִג ִר ָה פ ֶמ אלֹ ְו ."םי ֶפ ָר ְתּ ַה ת ִא ל ֵח ָר בֹנ ְג ֶתּ ַו" ]ט"י ,א"ל
             order for her to be a helpmate to the man, and what use is there for                         .'"ה ָני ֶדּ א ֵצ ֵתּ ַו" ]'א ,ד"ל ם ֶָ[ ר ַמ ֱא ִנּ ִֶ ,תי ֶנ ָס ְר ַׁ
             her when they are one body, the main goal of Creation was for them
             to be two independent beings.  And so the reason HaKadosh Bruch
             Hu first created them as one was in order that they would bond
             together with love and a sense of one-ness more than their feeling of
             closeness to their brothers or other relatives, that this couple would



                 In this regard we find (in Gemara Niddah 31b) “Why does the Torah
                 impose a seven-day waiting period on a Niddah after she stops seeing              י ֵד ְכּ ה ָתְי ָה ה ָעוּנ ְצּ ִֶ  ַעי ֶדּה ְל" ... - "ךָ ְתּ ְֶ ֶא ה ָרֹ ָש הֵיּ ַא" :וּל ֲא ֶָ םי ֶכ ָא ְל ַמּ ַה  .8
                 a discharge?  Because he is familiar with her and may have tired of
                 her, and so the Torah says – Let her be Tameh for seven days in order             ]ב"ע ז"פ א ָעי ֶצ ְמ א ָב ָבּ ם ֵֶ ְבּ 'ט ח"י תי ֶֶא ֵר ְבּ י" ֶֶ ַר[ "הּ ָל ְע ַבּ ל ַע הּ ָב ְבּ ַח ְל
                 that she will be beloved to her husband just as she was at the time of            ה ָדּ ֶמ פא ָכּ םי ֶלּ ַג ְמ ל" ַז ַר י ֶנ ֵֶ ד ַצּ ֶמ ,הּ ָתוּעי ֶנ ְצ ל ַע םי ֶד ְמּל וּנ ָא ד ָח ִא ד ַצּ ֶמ
                 their wedding when he took her under his Chupah.”                                                                    .פ ָמּ ַר ְל ר ַאֹבי ֶו ,תוּנ ָתְיּ ַצ ל ִֶ
