                    ANNUAL LITERACY FIESTA

On October 9, 2021, the club held their annual Literacy
Fiesta. This year, as a result of the pandemic, it was a
“Literacy Fiesta To Go.” As usual, the event was in
collaboration with Bethany United Methodist Church in
Brooklyn, New York. This community project is
spearheaded by Lion Dr. Paulette Kenwood, a member of
Brooklyn Crown Heights Lions Club. In support of District
Governor Anthony Cochran’s theme, “Growth Through
       Service………Teaming Together,” other collaborators
included Brooklyn Metropolis Lions Club, Chelsea’s
Charity, Hindi’s Library, Koeppel Nissan, Dr. Damion
Kenwood and one of Brooklyn Crown Heights’ newest
Leos, Leo Preston Paul, the grandson of Lion Dr. Paulette
       Kenwood.
Chelsea’s Charity was founded by a 12 year old artist
who designs her own drawstring bags, fills them with art
supplies and donates them to children in various
communities, to encourage them to pursue their dream
as an artist. She donated 25 bags to the Fiesta. Brooklyn
Metropolis Lions Club, represented by Lions Emerson
Campbell and Nicole Jones-Follins contributed backpacks
and snacks. As the children and/or youths received their
bags, Lion Emerson emphasized the importance of
literacy and encouraged them to read daily.

Hindi’s Library donated over 300 books and novels for
children and adults. The novels “Permission to Dream”
by Christ Gardner, were donated by Dr. Damion
Kenwood, Lion Dr. Paulett Kenwood’s son. Those novels
were distributed to the adults. Koeppel Nissan donated
the personalized drawstring bags with the logo “Literacy
Fiesta Brooklyn Crown Heights/Bethany United Methodist
Church”. The bags contained school supplies and books.
A total of 150 bags were distributed and everyone walked
away very happy because they “Served From The Heart.”
Lion Dr. Paulette thanks the donors and supporters,
especially Lions Sandrina Kingston, Bibi Thomas-
Seraphin, Jennifer Seymour-Wright, Yolande Cadore, Leo
Preston Paul (Brooklyn Crown Heights) and Lions
Emerson Campbell and Nicole Jones-Follins (Metropolis)
