SPRINGFIELD GARDENS LIONS
On Saturday, November 4th 2023, at The Black Spectrum Theater in Jamaica Queens, the Springfield
Gardens Lions Club Inc. hosted a theater party at the 2 pm matinee of The Last Block Association. The play
was written and directed by the theater's founder, Carl Clay. Black Spectrum Theater has served the
Queen’s community since 1970.
The Last Block Association was an extremely humorous play that addressed the realistic and
sometimes comical issues many New York City communities faced in 2023.
Many of the guests reported that the play touched on subjects related to their own neighborhoods,
such as block integration, illegal squatters, law enforcement’s treatment of citizens based on skin color
and culture, and neighbors not getting along. There was even a cameo appearance by our local Senator,
Leroy Comrie.
Lions Stephanie Simeon and Gloria Garraway (Event co-chairpersons) greeted each of the sixty guests
as they presented their admission tickets. Lion President Merle Warren pinned each guest with a blue
ribbon in honor of November’s Diabetes Awareness Month. All Springfield Gardens Lions were dressed
in blue to highlight awareness about Diabetes further.
Everyone left the theater laughing and smiling, waiting for the Springfield Gardens Lions Club Inc.’s
next event.
