20-K1 LIONS LEAD THE WEST INDIAN-
AMERICAN LABOR DAY PARADE
Labor Day celebrates working men and women and the legacy of the
labor movement. But Labor Day is also known for one of the DG Ingrid with VDG Antonio and Senator Charles Schumer in photo op
world’s largest celebration of Caribbean culture. The annual West
Indian / American Labor Day Carnival Parade takes place on Eastern
Parkway in Brooklyn, but was canceled for two (2) years as a result
of the COVID-19 Pandemic.
This year, it was a joyful and impressive return! After the Marshall’s
Breakfast, Brooklyn Borough President, Antonio Reynoso. serving as
Grand Marshall, and NYS Senator Charles Schumer started the DG Ingrid, VDG Antonio and Leo Mascot Kamiya Atherly lead the parade
contingent of officials down Eastern Parkway.
District Governor Ingrid Andrews-Campbell, First Vice District Governor,
Antonio Robles, and our sociable Leo Mascot Kamiya Atherley (East
New York Lions),led a pride of 50+ Lions in bright yellow vests and
Leos in sparkling cream vests. With the various flags of the
Caribbean fluttering cheerfully in the cool morning breeze, the Lions
and Leos paraded proudly to the rhythmic beat of “The Garifuna
Drummers of St. Vincent”. (Cheers to our District Governor Ingrid Labor Day with 20-K1 Lions and Leos
Andrews-Campbell and her “Vincentian roots.”) The Garifuna sound
is an ethnic music and dance with African, Arawak and Kalinago
elements, originating with the Afro-Indigenous Garifuna people from
Central America, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.
Media coverage of the event was facilitated by Fox 5 TV News and
Channel 7 Eyewitness News, an excellent opportunity for increasing
community visibility and enhancing public relations. Participating Our illustrious leaders lead by example
clubs included Central Brooklyn, (Home Club of DG Ingrid), Bedford
Stuyvesant, Clinton Hill, Crown Heights, East New York, First
Responders, Jefferson, Kings County, Leaders, Metropolis, Midwood, New
Horizon, New Lots, Rising Star, Stuy Park, Transition, Arverne Visionary,
Laurelton, Rego Park-Forest Hill and Springfield Gardens.
At the end of the 3.7 miles walk, a delicious lunch was served by
the Hospitality Team, thanks to Lion Yvette Jackson, Chairperson and
Lion Sharon Elcock., Co-Chair. Kudos to Lion Mike Yansen, (Labor Day Proud of our Caribbean heritage
Chairperson.) Special appreciation to Lion Tony Herbert (First
Responders Lions Club) for securing the donation from NY Multi
Cultural Restaurant & Nightlife, Chambers of Commerce., to help offset
overhead cost. Finally, we warmly salute all the participants for their
support.
