What Is an Arrhythmia?
Our heart can beat irregularly for many reasons. One condition of these irregular heartbeats is arrhythmia.
An arrhythmia or dysrhythmia is an abnormal heartbeat. Arrhythmias can start in different parts of our heart
and they can be too fast, too slow, or just irregular. Normally, our heart beats in an organized way. Normal
heart rhythm is important because the heart supplies our whole body with nutrients and oxygen.
Speed-up heart rate during physical activity is normal and slow heart rate is also normal while resting or
sleeping. It is also normal to feel as if your heart skips a beat occasionally. however, a frequent irregular
rhythm may mean that your heart doesn’t pump enough blood to your body. You may feel dizzy, faint, or
have other symptoms.
Some types of arrhythmia are harmless and don’t need treatment. Other types can put us at risk for cardiac
arrest. Many are in between these two extremes. It’s important to see your healthcare provider if you have
symptoms like extreme fatigue or heart palpitations. A healthcare provider can tell us which type of
arrhythmia we have and what kind of treatment we need, if any. Treatment depends on the type of
arrhythmia. Some of the treatments are medications, lifestyle changes, therapies, devices, and surgery.
