NGT Positioning
Confirming NGT positioning
The following is a dialogue between a nurse and a patient’s family talking about the
patient’s NGT placement. Read the information given by the nurse related to the placement
of the NGT and complete the tasks.
a. Label the anatomical landmarks of an NGT placement X-ray according to the information given
in the dialogue.
Ns. Grace : “Assalamu’alaikum, Sir. I’m here to talk to you about your wife’s NGT that she has had
since two days ago.”
Mr. Hari : “Wa’alaikumsalam.”
Ns. Grace : “So first, let me show you this X-ray picture to brief you on the anatomical landmarks
where we position the tube. Knowing this is necessary so we can later confirm the
placement of the tube.”
Mr. Hari : “Sure, please.”
Ns. Grace : “So, let’s start from the upper part. The one shape like a long pipe down to to lower
part is called the trachea. This is where the tube enters the stomach all along through
the carina which is a cartilage ridge between two bronchi. And that brings us to the
middle part of the X-ray where we have the right main bronchus and the left main
bronchus. “
Mr. Hari : “Are you referring to these two near the dark area here?”
Ns. Grace : “Yes, that’s right.”
Mr. Hari : “Now, you see a white curve bulging in the left main bronchus here? That’s what we call
aortic knuckle.”
“Finally, down to the lower part, we have diaphragm. That’s where the tube is going to
rest.”
