Language Focus: Expressing Priority, Stating Goals and Criteria, and Discussing Types of
Intervention
1. Expressing Priority
Key Language Focus:
• Use modal verbs like “must,” “should,” or “need to” to emphasize urgency when prioritizing care
and use sequencing words like “first,” “next,” “after that,” and “finally” to highlight the order of
treatment.
Example Sentences:
• “The patient is experiencing difficulty breathing, high fever, and chest pain. The first priority must
be to administer oxygen therapy to stabilize breathing before addressing the fever and chest
pain.”
• “We need to control the patient’s high fever as it poses an immediate risk, and then address their
dehydration and monitor blood pressure afterward.”
• “The patient is presenting with pain, dizziness, and nausea. However, we should alleviate their
pain first, as it will allow for more accurate assessments of the dizziness and nausea.”
2. Stating Goals and Criteria
Key Language Focus:
• Use of verbs like “improve”, “reduce”, “maintain”, “increase”, etc. and use phrases to express
measurable outcomes: “within 24 hours”, “by the end of the week”, or “with a pain level below 3.”
Example Sentences:
• “The goal is for the patient to improve mobility by the end of the week.”
• “The patient will reduce pain to a manageable level within 48 hours.”
• “The patient’s temperature will remain stable at 37°C.”
Example for Measurable Criteria:
• “The patient will walk 20 meters without assistance within 3 days.”
• “The patient’s blood pressure will stay below 130/80 mmHg within 24 hours.”
3. Elaborating on the Appropriate Type of Intervention
Key Language Focus:
• Use action verbs to describe care: “administer”, “monitor”, “assist”, “educate” and use phrases
like “as needed”, “every 2 hours”, “before meals” to specify when and how often care will be
provided.
Example Sentences:
• “The nurse will administer pain medication every 6 hours.”
• “The nurse will monitor the patient’s vital signs every hour.”
• ”The nurse will assist the patient with walking twice a day.”
