Vocabulary: Tools Used for Patient Positioning
Crutches : They are two assistive devices that allow weight transfer from the lower
body to the upper body, often used by patients with injuries or surgery.
Wheelchair : A wheelchair is for patients with limited or no ability to walk, allowing both
self-propulsion and caregiver assistance.
Hand Roll : Hand rolls maintain the fingers in a slightly flexed and functional position
and keep the thumb slightly adducted in opposition to the fingers.
Sandbags : Sandbags are soft devices filled with substances that can be used to shape
or contour the body’s shape and provide support. They immobilize
extremities and maintain specific body alignment
Side Rails : Side rails are bars along the sides of the length of the bed. They ensure
client safety and are useful for increased mobility. They also assist in rolling
from side to side or sitting in bed. Check with your agency’s policies
regarding the use of side rails as they vary from state to state.
Wedge Pillows : Wedge pillows are triangular pillows made of heavy foam and are used to
maintain legs in abduction following total hip replacement surgery.
Walker : A lightweight frame that provides support when walking. It has four legs,
and some models come with wheels on the front two legs to make it easier
to move.
Cane : A single-pointed stick used for support while walking. Canes are often
adjustable and come in different styles, such as quad canes with four feet
for added stability.
