Chayei Adam - K’lal 148 - Laws of Lulav & Daled Minim
]1[ It is a positive mitzva of the Torah that every single Jew should take a lulav

and [all] four species, as it says “And you shall take on the first day...” and after
this it says “and you shall rejoice before Hashem for seven days”. Chazal
understand that ‘before Hashem’ means that in the Beis HaMikdash, you shall
rejoice for seven days, [but] in other places, the Torah obligation is only on the
first day. However, Chazal mandated that we take [them] all seven days, even
nowadays and even outside of Eretz Yisroel, as a remembrance of the Beis
HaMikdash. 2
]2[ The Torah writes “kapos termarim” [which refers to] the palm branches we
call lulav. “Anaf eitz avos” refers to hadasim (myrtle branches). “Arvei Nachal”
mentioned by the Torah doesn’t refer to just anything which grows by the river
but is rather a specific species called “arvei nachal”. The “pri eitz hadar'' referred
to by the Torah is the esrog which is called merageg in Aramaic and is “hadar” in
lashon ha’kodesh. All of these things were explained by Moshe Rabeinu [and is a]
halacha l’Moshe mi’Sinai. 3
]3[ All of these four species are [composite parts of] one mitzva and are

requisite components. Together, they are referred to as the mitzva of lulav

because it is the highest one of them. One may not detract from nor add on to
them. [This is learned] because it says “u’lekatchtem lachem” and not “v’lakachta”

or “k’chu”. Therefore, Chazal understand that this means that it must be a
