**Note all alignments must be done consistently to ensure proper alignments are being performed. This document
is not intended to replace IW 8071 A0 and it should be referenced to validate no change has been made to
alignment limits. This document is intended only to assist in the set up and technic used with performing alignments
with a laser alignment tool**
Cold Alignment
Tooling Required
*All tooling should be calibrated and in good condition. Using improper or damaged tooling can result in false
readings and incorrect reporting.
Calibrated 6-inch caliper: Shown Starrett 799 digital caliper.
Tape measure: if possible use a metric tape measure to avoid the need for conversion.
Laser Alignment tool: Shown Easy-Laser
Dial indicator with mag base: shown Mitutoyo Indicator and base
Set Up Before Alignment
Before a proper laser alignment can be performed, proper set up is required. Confirm you have all required
equipment, everything is in good working order. The laser tool is clean paying close attention to the lenses,
calibrated and appropriate for the engine you are working on.
• Tooling: Alignment tool should be inspected in good condition, all components confirmed operational,
Magnet blocks, chains, extension pieces, and batteries are new or charged in both the alignment tablet and
laser devices. Know your tool and how to properly set up for success, refer to individual user manual for
specific details for that device. DO NOT ASSUME EACH LASER TOOL IS THE SAME
• Engine Block: The engine block should be filled with fluids (coolant and water). Block heater should be
operational and Jacket water should be at nominal temp of 125F OR block heater cycling temperature.
