Leaving Kingston and Moving to Hamilton
owards the end of my training, it became clear there wasn’t a job waiting for me back in Kingston. I had always
Tenvisioned working and retiring there—it seemed like the perfect place to settle down. An opportunity to stay in
Boston presented itself, but in May 1970, I received a letter summoning me for my pre-induction physical for the US draft
during the Vietnam War. That made the decision for us: it was time to return to Canada. With no job lined up, I managed
to secure a position at McMaster University, which required completing a final clinical year of residency. This was
facilitated by Dr . Michael Brain. In late June 1970, we packed up the car while Helen took care of organizing the movers.
We moved to Hamilton, where my dad found us a rental house on Westminster Ave.
